Steps to remove an old bathtub

An old, worn-out bathtub can sometimes provide the impetus to remodel a bathroom or replace the tub. Removing a bathtub sometimes does not require a professional technician. However, because bathtubs are bulky and heavy, you will likely need help with removal.

Turn off the water supply

Turn off the faucets that supply the bathtub. If there are no valves near the tub or in the pipes leading to the tub, you will need to turn off the main water supply. Turn on a faucet, preferably at a lower level than the tub, to drain any water present in the water lines.

Disconnect water pipes

Remove the tub spout by turning it counterclockwise. Use a wrench if necessary. The water pipes must be removed. If the water pipes are connected with nuts, simply loosen them. Otherwise, use a pipe cutter. You can also use a reciprocating saw to remove the spout, handles and pipes.

Cut off the drain

Unscrew the drain plug by taking a pair of pliers and inserting the handles into the molded cross piece of the drain fitting. Place a large screwdriver between the handles and turn the handles counterclockwise. This is an old plumbing trick and works very well. The top drain plate will need to be removed with a screwdriver. Another option is to cut the drain pipes from the bottom with a reciprocating saw. Do not use this option if you plan to reuse the drain pipes and trap for the new tub.

Remove the bathtub

For a standard tub, place a large blanket on the floor in front of the tub. With one person on each side, lift the tub from behind and lean it until the front of the tub rests on the blanket. The tub can then be slid out of the bathroom on the blanket. Pushing the tub on a blanket is much easier than lifting and can help prevent injury.
