Installation of a drain for a sink in the bathroom
Bathroom sinks, usually referred to as “vanities” by plumbing contractors, have a drain body that runs underneath the opening of the sink and directs used water to the trap and sewer pipes and out of the house. A series of parts above and below the drain body keep the water in the drain components where it belongs, and keep your bathroom floor dry.
Drain body
Disassemble the parts of the drain that are normally shipped and sold assembled so they can be installed in your sink. Unscrew the nut from the flange and top of the drain body. Unscrew the end piece from the bottom of the drain housing. Peel the blue protective film from the top of the plug and flange.
Wrap sealing tape around the bottom two-thirds of the flange threads or apply pipe sealant to the threads, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Roll a marble-sized pinch of plumber’s putty between your palms until it warms and softens. Roll the putty into a snake shape and wrap it around the bottom of the flange. Insert the flange into the sink’s drain hole.
Slide the gasket and washer around the flange, which is now sticking out of the bottom of the drain hole, up against the bottom of the drain hole. Screw the nut onto the threads on the bottom of the flange without tightening it all the way.
Press the drain body washer into the groove on the bottom of the nut. Screw the drain body into the bottom of the nut. Align the bulging part of the drain body (gasket hole) – which is connected to the rod that controls the plug – with the wall behind the sink. Hand tighten the nut so that the seal hole remains aligned with the wall.
Rub off any excess plumber’s putty that leaks from the edge of the flange and return it to the container.
Plug Stroke Rod
Insert the gasket, usually a thick piece of black rubber, into the gasket hole. Insert the rod into the seal while pressing the stopper ball against it. Slide the housing nut over the rod and hand tighten it over the threads in the seal hole to hold the stopper ball against the seal.
Apply thread tape to the threads of the end piece and twist it into the bottom of the drain housing.
Slide the end of the rod away from the drain body through the hole in one end of the clip, through a hole in the link hanging off the faucet rod, and finally through the second hole in the clip. Tighten the thumbscrew provided to connect the link to the lift rod. Adjust the rod and clip up or down so that the lift rod opens the stopper when pushed down and closes it completely when pulled up.
